Renovation works across levels 77 to 81 and 85 of PETRONAS Tower 1 mean re-engineering services high inside one of the world's most recognisable towers while the floors around the work stay occupied. Everything moves through the same lifts and risers the building's tenants use; every noisy operation has a permitted window; every system tie-in is planned against the tower's live services.

The engineering itself — ACMV, electrical, fire protection, plumbing — is conventional. What is not conventional is delivering it at height, inside an operating landmark, to a standard its owner will accept. That is a logistics and coordination discipline as much as a design one.

What this kind of commission involves

Commercial and corporate work is nearly always a retrofit inside a building that keeps trading. The design problem is ordinary; the constraint is not. Access windows, rigging routes, noise limits, landlord approvals and the fact that the floor below is occupied determine what can actually be built more often than the load calculation does.
